Park: Expanding biportal endoscopic spine surgery: from Korean innovation to global practice
asj-2025-0490i1.jpg
It is my pleasure to introduce the April 2025 special issue of the Asian Spine Journal, focusing on endoscopic spine surgery. Over the past decade, this field has progressed significantly, and in particular, biportal techniques—led by Korean surgeons—have contributed to broader applications and clinical adoption. With its advantages in minimizing tissue damage and supporting faster recovery, endoscopic spine surgery is now emerging as a new standard in the treatment of spinal disorders.
This issue includes 14 peer-reviewed articles, ranging from basic techniques to navigation-assisted procedures and long-term outcome studies. Among them, several studies were particularly noteworthy—such as those addressing surgical strategies for obese patients, the clinical advancement of biportal endoscopy, and the practical use of navigation systems in complex cases. These contributions offer meaningful insights that are both academically valuable and relevant to clinical practice.
It is also worth noting the strong representation of authors from Asia, including Korea, Thailand, and Taiwan, reflecting the region’s active leadership in this evolving field. While techniques continue to improve, further work is needed in areas such as standardized training, patient selection, and long-term data collection to support safe and effective global adoption.
I would like to thank all authors, reviewers, and the editorial team for their dedication and effort. I hope this issue serves as a helpful resource for surgeons and researchers committed to advancing minimally invasive spine surgery.
