Wu: Editorial comment for the special issue on endoscopic spine surgery

As a guest editor of this special issue of the Asian Spine Journal (April 2025), it is with immense gratitude and pride that we reflect on the journey leading to the publication of this collection dedicated to advancements in endoscopic spine surgery. This issue represents a significant milestone in the field, showcasing innovative research, technical developments, and clinical insights that are poised to influence both current practices and future directions in minimally invasive spine surgery.
This special issue comprises approximately 14 high-quality articles, including original studies, technical notes, review articles, and case reports. Each contribution has been meticulously selected and rigorously peer-reviewed to ensure scientific excellence and clinical relevance. The topics range from novel surgical techniques, such as biportal endoscopic approaches for lumbar interbody fusion, to systematic reviews addressing challenges like obesity-related surgical complications. These articles collectively highlight the versatility and growing impact of endoscopic spine surgery across diverse patient populations and conditions. There are some notable contributions, including a study on the social media footprint of endoscopic spine surgery, analyzing its role in disseminating knowledge globally. Technical innovations such as cost-effective three-dimensional printed cervical spine models for surgical training, preliminary findings on advanced navigation systems like O-arm-guided transforaminal discectomy, and systematic reviews proposing frameworks for surgical difficulty progression and addressing specific challenges like obesity-related complications are highlighted. These articles not only advance scientific understanding but also provide practical insights that can be directly applied to improve patient outcomes.
Serving as guest editors for this special issue has been an enriching experience. It has allowed us to engage deeply with cutting-edge research while fostering collaboration among experts from around the world. The diversity of perspectives—from Asia, Europe, North America, and beyond—underscores the global nature of progress in endoscopic spine surgery. The dedication of authors, reviewers, and editorial staff has been instrumental in bringing this issue to fruition.
We are particularly inspired by how this field continues to evolve, driven by technological advancements and interdisciplinary collaboration. Endoscopic techniques are increasingly recognized for their ability to minimize tissue damage, reduce recovery times, and improve overall surgical precision—a testament to the ingenuity and commitment of spine surgeons worldwide.
